Plants Aren’t The Only Things Growing At Hines
Hines Horticulture partnered with the Curing Children’s Cancer Fund (CCCF) in 2006 to raise awareness and proceeds toward research intended to cure pediatric cancer. Through public relations efforts and its network of garden center customers across the United States, Hines was able to raise more than $17,000 and make known the CCCF’s brand and mission on a national level. Proceeds were raised through sales of the hydrangea ‘Big Smile’, an exclusive hydrangea from Hines chosen specifically for the CCCF promotion.
Hydrangea ‘Big Smile’ is a cultivar that offers dark stems and glossy foliage in the spring, lace-cap flowers through the summer and deep-merlot fall foliage. Enhanced hardiness makes ‘Big Smile’ a good choice for gardeners in Zones 5 and 6. Hines will continue the ‘Big Smile’ promotion in 2007 and hopes to raise even more proceeds for pediatric cancer research.
Hines is also preparing for another busy spring season with a new growing facility in Winters, Calif. With more than 618 available acres for production, the new facility is one of the largest Hines operating sites in the country. The facility includes a propagation cutting facility, propagation greenhouse, sorting facility, canning, dock covers, shipping and labeling facility.
