California Garden Center Turns 125 Years Old

Armstrong Garden Centers, the largest independent, Southern California, employee-owned retail nursery, is celebrating 125 years of business.

Armstrong Garden Centers, the largest independent, Southern California, employee-owned retail nursery, is celebrating 125 years of business, according to an article in Pasadena Living. The business started in 1889 as a small fruit tree nursery in Ontario, Calif., and has since grown to over 31 locations in the state.

Since the 1980s, the company has been 100 percent employee owned. Around this same time, the business also added a growing division, Armstrong growers, to allow quality control from start to finish.

For the anniversary, Armstrong Garden Centers is hosting spring garden party events at each of its locations with food, drinks, party favors and special savings on March 13.
