Iowa Garden Center Adds Ice Cream

Mairet's Garden Center in Muscatine, Iowa, previously added a greenhouse to its operations, but its newest expansion is even more outside the box: Sweet Treats, an ice cream shop in the building set to open June 14.

Mairet’s Garden Center in Muscatine, Iowa, previously added a greenhouse to its operations, but its newest expansion is even more outside the box: Sweet Treats, an ice cream shop in the building set to open June 14. In addition to serving up 20 flavors of ice cream made in Madison, Wisconsin, the shop has picnic tables for people who want to take a break from shopping the garden center.

Owner Shane Mairet opened the garden center in 2009, which not only sells annuals and perennials in the spring but also homegrown produce such as melons, peppers and tomatoes.

The ice cream shop had been on Mairet’s mind for quite some time, according to an article in the Muscatine Journal.

“I like overall expansion and always trying something new. I’m trying to see what works and what doesn’t,” said Mairet, whose next project will be in high tunnel produce production.
