Never Too EarlyBy Abby (Kleckler) McGarry

On the radio during my commute this morning, the topic of conversation was Halloween costumes. Although I don’t even want to think fall and the holidays yet, retailers like you are already there.

I’ve seen bags of Halloween candy conveniently placed next to back-to-school supplies and pop-up shops opening their doors everywhere in the city. With the National Retail Federation estimating Americans spent $7.4 billion on Halloween last year, it makes sense to get in on the action.

Last week on the IGC Chicago Garden Center Tour, one retailer stood out for their Halloween merchandising: Gensler Gardens in Loves Park, Illinois. Check out this photo album on our Facebook page to see Gensler’s displays and other neat ideas from a handful of garden centers.

I’d love to know what you have planned to make a big splash this holiday season. From pumpkins to fall mums to Christmas poinsettias, what’s on the agenda? Are you recreating a hugely successful event from the past or trying something totally new? Let me know at [email protected].

More Than a Store

Shoppers want an experience, and there are so many ways beyond products to get customers excited to come to your store.

One article by Heidi Wollaeger with Michigan State University caught my attention, “Twelve ways Danish garden centers enhance their consumer’s experience.” I think you’ll see some of these ideas wouldn’t just work in Denmark but here as well.

Cheers,

Abby
