York, SC, Garden Center Closes

Stacy's Garden Center is closing its doors after 39 years of operation.

Stacy’s Garden Center in York, S.C., is closing its doors after 39 years of operation, according to a report in The Herald.

Metrolina Greenhouses of Huntersville, N.C., purchased the assets of Stacy’s Greenhouses in August and will close the store Nov. 3, 2013.

Abe Van Wingerden, co-CEO of Metrolina, told the paper it is harder to operate stand-alone garden centers because of greater competition from Big Box stores. Metrolina does not operate any retail centers.

All current Stacy’s Garden Center employees have been offered positions at the wholesale operations in the city.

Stacy’s location in Shelby, N.C., was not part of the deal with Metrolina, and it will remain open.
