Illinois-Based Nursery Shifts to Animal Rescue

Alsip Home and Nursery's new CEO made the decision for the company to discontinue purchasing pets from breeders and instead focus on rescue operations.

Alsip Home and Nursery’s new CEO, Rich Christakes, made the decision for the company to discontinue purchasing pets from breeders and instead focus on rescue operations. The switch comes after the company’s Frankfort, Ill., location was linked to puppy mills, according to a report in the Frankfort Patch.

“I am very pleased to announce that we are going full rescue and will NOT be buying dogs at all at any Alsip Nursery location, even from local hobby breeders,” Christakes said in a statement on the company’s website. “We are going to 100% rescue.”

The shift was officially announced in January 2014, but it all began in 2011 while Christakes was general manager at the St. John, Ind., location. Once he was named CEO in 2012, the real changes got underway.

A veterinary clinic was set up at the Indiana store in December 2012, followed by one at the Illinois store in December 2013.

The store, however, still does have some puppies from breeders and will continue to keep these animals until they find a home.
