Dr. Lahey’s Garden Center is closing the doors of its Pittsfield, Mass., home. The landscaping and retail business has had a spot on South Street for 30 years, but owners Maureen and Joe Corcoran recently sold their 2.4-acre lot to entrepreneur Vijay Mahida.

Mahida bought the land for $455,000 and plans to erect a $10 million Hilton Garden Inn hotel on the lot. The Corcoran’s will run the landscaping part of their business on land they are leasing while they look for a new location for the retail side of operations.

They plan to stay in the same area of Berkshire County. The pair bought Berkshire Mountain Garden in December 1999 and changed the name back to its original. Dr. Lahey’s Garden Center opened its doors in December 1980.

The original owner, Gary Lahey, had a doctoral degree in plant pathology from the University of Massachusetts.
